When you think about starting over, it can be overwhelming.  There are so many feelings that come with new beginnings: anxiousness, insecurity, nervousness and excitement.  Change can be pretty scary. If we are not careful, we can let our minds get sucked into the pit of fear and doubt. 

We need to remember that when one door closes, another is opening for us.  Take the time to embrace the new phase of your life and feel the universal pull into your fresh start.  It’s funny how things come and go in our lives.  People, jobs, experiences are all present for a lesson that we must learn and once we learn the lesson they move on and so should we. 

Sometimes a little help is needed to get through the transition period.

Incorporating Essential Oils can help calm and motivate the mind while we navigate to our new place in the world.  One of my all-time favorite oils is Bergamot. With both calming and uplifting abilities, Bergamot can help to dissipate anxious feelings, while simultaneously providing cleansing and purifying benefits.  I diffuse and use it topically.  When using it topically, jojoba oil is my carrier oil of choice.  Even if it didn’t have the vast benefits, I would still use it, because it has such fun “citrusy” smell. 

Bergamot oil is extracted from the bergamot orange called Citrus bergamia.  One of the first uses of Bergamot oil was to flavor Earl Grey tea.  It didn’t take long to realize the amazing benefits this small fruit provided.  In addition to its help with anxious feelings, bergamot is also great for assisting with sleeplessness, stress, joint and muscle pain, skin blemishes, oily skin, and coughs.

Moms today spend countless hours away from their homes and families, working.  I am just going to say it, it’s just not fair!  To be middle class today, both parents are working 40 hours a week, meanwhile shipping their babies off to daycare at 10 -12 weeks of age. 

There is a struggle with most women between motherhood and career.  We strive to be the best moms and employees we can be. But the constant pull between the two does not make us great at either one.

I don’t want to make anyone depressed reading this, but the statistics are very sad.  The consistent rise in the cost of living does not match the rise in income for American families. Women who once had a choice to work or stay home with their babies, now find staying home is unfortunately, not an option. 

The Plus Side of being a Working Mom

Being a working mom is not a bad thing, in fact, it shows our children the value of hard work and responsibilities.  It shows them how we must earn what we get in life, that we should not depend on other people for our needs. 

With the sad reality of divorce, and the likelihood that it could happen to any of us, it is great to know that us moms can provide, if put in a situation that we must. However, there is a need to feel satisfied with what we are doing and to feel content in our lives.  When we feel unsettled and as if our jobs are robbing us of our life, it’s time for a change.

How does the job you are in make you feel?

That is the main point that I am trying to get to here.  Do you feel well?  Does your job/career drain you and make it hard to come home and leave work at work and be there for your family?  Are you exhausted because you have given so much energy to your 9-5 that you have none left when you get home? I know these feelings all too well, and it’s not a good way to live.

So how do you know when it’s time to walk a different path?

It’s a feeling deep in your soul.  If you take time to really get in touch with who you are and who you want to be, the answer will be glaring back at you.

  • Do you feel calm or anxious when you think about what you are doing for a career?
  • Do you feel valued at work?
  • Do you feel energized or drained by what you are doing?
  • What does your future look like 10, 15, 20 years from now? 

After answering these questions, you will know if you are on the right path.  What do we do if we are not?  When we must work, but we want to feel more content?  When our jobs are making us not feel well?

How do we plan for a drastic career change? 

The easy thing to do would be to find another job in the same field but with another company. If your current job is not giving you what you want, odds are staying in the same career, just a change of scenery, is not going to fulfill you either, trust me, it’s not!  

This time don’t take the easy route, wake up and live! Become who you were meant to be, strive to find your purpose in life!

We need to ask ourselves who we are, what brings us joy?  What is our ideal state and how do we get there, remember “Rome wasn’t built in a day” planning is everything! 

  • Follow your heart
  • Ask yourself what interests you? 
  • What makes you want to get out of bed in the morning? 
  • What is it that speaks to you?  Do you have a dream job in mind? 

Once you figure this part out, it’s time to put everything into action.

  • Research:  The internet is a wonderful resource. Whether it is going back to school or finding something you can do from home, chances are you can find it on the vast world wide web. Today you can take almost any course or class online, you can work remotely using the internet, if you search you will find that dream job.  Things may be a little stressful at first, but always keep the goal in mind, it WILL be worth it.
  • Set a date:  After you figure out what it is you desire for your future, have a goal in mind as to when you want to make the big change.  Write it down and make it real.
  • Set up your financial situation:  This is probably the hardest part.  There is a good chance that you may be taking a temporary pay cut, if you are starting over with a new career.  Before making any drastic changes, make sure that you are financially prepared.  Take as much money as possible out of your paycheck and set it aside in a savings account, learn to live on less and SAVE.  Make sure your debts are in order and can be paid.  Simplify and be realistic about what your needs are, knowing how much money you will need to make you feel content with the transition. 

Your happiness will lead to success.  When we enjoy what we are doing, it comes naturally, often it just take time and patience. 

  • Write down your plan:  Now that you know what you are going to do, have set a date, and have your finances in place.  Write down the plan.  Keep it somewhere visible and reference it often.  Highlight important dates, like the dates of courses you are taking, dates of when you will have enough money saved up, dates of when you will start your new career and part ways with your old one, often overlapping the two makes the most sense. 
  • Get to work: Just do it!  Start now, whatever IT is! No regrets, life is too short to spend so much of your time doing something that makes you miserable.  There is so much out there we can do to make our life a little sweeter.  What are you waiting for?  Remember this quote “The time will pass anyway.  You can spend it creating the life you want or spend it living the life you don’t, the choice is yours.”

Keeping Kids Healthy During the Holidays

During the holidays it can be almost impossible to keep our kiddos healthy. The holidays bring everyone and every germ all together in one place! The constant sweet treats and stimulation can quickly make our kids more vulnerable to those nasty illnesses lurking around during the holidays. The following are tips that I’ve put together that may help ward off some of the sickness.

1. Stress the importance of hand washing!

Kids tend to get so busy that they forget to wash their hands. It’s especially important for them to do before eating. Setting an example and reminding them consistently will help make it a routine. I always have my OnGuard hand sanitizer handy as well, just in case we’re somewhere that hand washing is not possible.

2. Eating plenty of fruits and veggies.

This time of year is busy, no doubt. Keep the refrigerator, freezer, cupboards all stocked with fruit and vegetables, as much as possible, to ensure that there is an easy option for snacking.

I love dried fruit and the convenience of fruit cups (forgive me mother earth). We also always have a fruit for breakfast and make sure to pack a fruit and veggie in their lunchboxes everyday. Keep it simple, it doesn’t need to be anything fancy. And remember “no dessert until you eat your veggies!”

3. Get a good night’s sleep.

I’ve always been a stickler for this one. Since my kids were little, they’ve had a set bedtime. Sleep is extremely important for their growing bodies and immune systems. Lack of sleep leads to grumpy kids getting sick, not too fun right?

Try to stick to the routine as much as possible. If it’s a late night, try to make up for it a little in the morning by letting them sleep in. You can always diffuse an essential oil like lavender or Serenity blend to help calm them down after an overly stimulated day.

4. Control the sugar intake.

This one’s a tough one. Sugary treats are everywhere at the holidays. We all know what sugar can do to kid’s hyperactivity, but too much can also affect their immune systems, making it hard for them to fight off those nasty germs. How do we control their temptation? Well I don’t know, honestly.

I believe educating them on how too much sugar can be bad and make their tummies feel icky helps a little. Making them ask before they have a treat is also a good rule to have. Although, hard to say “no” it at least gives us parents a little awareness as to when and what they’re eating, then we can have the chance to say “just one” or “this is all you’re getting.”

5. Keep them hydrated.

Good old H2O is so good for everyone. We all know that our bodies need water to work properly. Water helps them flush toxins out of their little systems and keep their immune systems up and running. I recommend investing in a cool water bottle that they like and encourage them to drink as many bottles as they can every day.

6. Get them outside to play.

When the temperature drops outside we all want to hibernate. However, fresh air and sunshine can do wonders for mood and the body’s defense system.

Playing outside releases stress and gives their bodies the exercise it needs to stay healthy, always.  Remember to set a good example and go outside and play with them, go for a walk even if just for 10-15 minutes. Every little bit helps!

7. Diffuse those Oils.

Essential oils are beneficial in so many ways. Diffusing oils calms the nervous system as we inhale them.  My favorite to diffuse this time of year is OnGuard essential oil blend as the day wraps up, it gives everyone in the house a nice a little boost to the immune system.

Family Time

Family Time

Finding time to just be a family is sometimes more complicated than one would think. There is no denying that life can be a bit crazy at times. Trying to have everyone in the same place for dinner can become quite the task, not alone having a long stretch of good quality family fun. However, time together is so important in the development of our children. They need to bond with us and we need to bond with them. We don’t need to plan anything elaborate, just carve out some time to just be together without distractions.

I love spending time with my kids, honestly there is nothing that I would rather do. We are not an extravagant family, quite simple really. The things that entertain us are probably pretty boring to some, but we love every minute. Here are just a few that require little or no planning:

Treasure hunting

Whether on a hike, a walk on the beach, or just a stroll through the back yard, there is treasure to be found everywhere. My daughter especially, is my little “collector.” I can remember when she would go to daycare, she would pick up rocks on her way in and then want to give them to her friends. Now that we live at the beach, she has quite the collection of shells and other beach findings. It is super fun to see what you can find. It can be pretty funny and interesting to hear the kid’s thoughts about their treasure.

Have a backyard fire

Having a little fire in the backyard is fun way to just hang out and enjoy each other’s company. My kids have grown up around a backyard fire. We lived in the country for the first 6 years of parenthood. We would have a little bonfire almost every weekend when the weather would allow. Now that we live in town, we have downgraded to a small fire pit, but we still have fires as often as possible. The kids love to sit around tell stories, roast marshmallows, and just chill out. Drawing, coloring, or crafting

Getting creative with your kids can be a relaxing way for everyone to hang out. Both of my kiddos love art! They are pretty good at it too, (they put my artwork to shame). Sometimes, we will have a purpose in mind with our crafts, like gifting them or sometimes it’s just to see what we can come up with. Creating is such a great outlet for the family. It allows us to share our creativity.

There are so many great, easy ways to be together as a family. Simply ride bikes, take a walk, have a scheduled game night, movie night, cooking or baking together, anything that shows your kids the meaning of family. Togetherness will do wonders for their overall wellbeing as well as yours. Childhood goes so fast, so make time now so that you don’t look back with regret later.

Does it ever feel like you have a million voices in your head and chatter that just won’t stop?  Do you have trouble falling asleep or wake up in the middle of the night, and start thinking about the “to do” lists or things that are going on in your life?  Hopefully, the following 9 tips will help you, whether it’s in the middle of the night, or any time of day, having a few tricks up your sleeve to calm your mind is essential to your well being.

  1. Essential oils Big surprise, right?  Any time of day essential oils can help to ground you and calm down your anxious minds.  During the day, I recommend carrying one of doTerra’s many roller blends, great for on the go.  Personally, I love to put a little inTune behind my ears at the beginning of the day and amazingly it’s still working at the end of a long day.  DoTerra has a variety of blends that will fit your taste and needs. In the evening, diffuse your favorite oil to help you relax.  Currently, my favorite oil for sleep is Serenity.
  1. Read a book-Let yourself get lost in a good book. When you are captivated by the words on a page, you can easily forget about the world around you and get lost in the story.
  2. Listen to music – I love listening to music, it’s a huge part of my life. Everyone has their own preferences, so put on whatever kind of music you enjoy, play it softly in the background or let it blast, whatever gives you the escape you need!
  3. Take a walk outside – Breathe in the fresh air, look all around you and experience the wonders of nature, notice how it makes you feel.
  4. Yoga – This doesn’t have to be an hour-long yoga session, just get up and do a few poses, your mind and body will thank you!
  5. Meditation – Breathe – Visualize, take an imaginary trip to your “happy place,” just be still and let go. There are also some great apps now that will walk you through guided meditations, I use Insight Timer and love it!
  6. Workout – Feeling stressed out? A good adrenaline release will calm the mind in no time.  It’s amazing how negative feelings can turn around after a good sweat.

  7. Take a warm bath – If you are at home and can escape to the bathroom, lock the door (if you have kids), turn on the tunes and take a long warm bath. This is a great way to relax your muscles and chill out after a long day.
  8. Get creative – Create. Whether you love to cook or craft, creating something gives your mind an alternative avenue.  Having something you love to do will give you a personal sense of accomplishment and feel good vibes!

Paleo, gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, keto, whole30 – It’s easy to see how anyone can get overwhelmed with what to eat these days.  There are so many different theories on what works best.  I have tried most them.  They all have their pros and cons.  What I found they all have in common is that each one eliminates something.  All this elimination can be unhealthy and hard to sustain.

The world we live in is full of beautiful, delicious, and healing food

When we choose to eliminate, we are depriving ourselves of some of the nutrients that help our bodies heal and grow.  I know that there are going to be a lot of critics out there, believe me I was once one them.  I have watched the documentaries and read the books.  I have bought into it all.  All of this in an attempt to try to heal my body and feel better.  Guess what, none of them really did that for me.  What is working best for me, is eating a wide variety of natural, whole foods in moderation.

It is important to eat mindfully

To listen to our bodies. To appreciate where the food has come from and what it is doing to help our bodies work efficiently.  I have always found food interesting.  I grew up on a farm, milking cows, butchering animals, harvesting grain, so I had a very first hand look at the processes in which food must go through to get to our tables.  When we take the time to think and care about where our food is coming from, then we can make the best food choices.

We are extremely fortunate today

There are now a growing number of ways to get healthy, organically raised food.  Local Farmers Markets being my personal favorite.  There are now so many local farmers who truly care about the food they are producing.  It’s so awesome to be able to meet the people who have grown the food you are about to feed your family. 

If there aren’t any Farmers Markets or they are hard to get to, most grocery stores now have a mass selection of organically and responsibly produced goods.  With all the meal delivery services out there these days, having organic meals delivered to your door is just a click away.  I have purchased meat from Butcher Box and am really impressed with their selection and quality.

As you are meal planning this week, make mindful choices.

Think about the food groups.  Include all of them.  Before you take off for the store, check to see if there is a local Farmers Market happening.  If there is, bring your family along, take time to talk to the farmers and ask questions, learn about your food.  As you prepare and consume your meals, think about the nutrients and what they are doing for your body.  Be thankful for the good food we are given.
